My ceramic slab-built forms are an exploration of form, volume, composition, line, surface and internal space with a reference to landscape, the natural and organic. The `organic' forms are primarily influenced by the landscape with its shapes, textures, structure and horizons, and secondly by the movement through space of lines created by various other everyday forms.
The reference to landscape is relatively non-literal and subtle enough to allow for multiple, and thus more personal, interpretations. In my sculptural work, this is encouraged by the delicate use of colour created solely by the firing to stoneware temperatures. I occasionally glaze around `openings' to draw attention to the internal space and the point at which the internal meets the external. Form permitting, glazed pieces are functional.
Each piece is constructed by hand with slabs of various clays to which I have added various materials. These are added at all stages in the preparing, constructing and drying processes for structural and decorative purposes. The additions and combinations of such materials vary with each piece, thus enhancing their individuality.
Individual, paired, or otherwise, I intend for these ceramic forms, whether sculptural of functional, to be seen alone while simultaneously working together in a group.
